last year, FBISD went through 3 audit processes that showed the following:

• Lack of consistency in education across FBISD schools
• Poor planning by FBISD
• Failure to adequately maintain facilities
• Failure to align the budget with educational priorities
• Lack of meaningful training for teachers
• Lack of support in the classroom
• Failure to comply with special education laws
• Failure to meet the needs of special populations including gifted, special education and ELL students

YOUR VOTE this year matters more than ever!

We are at a crossroads in FBISD. We can either continue on the path of backroom planning and decision-making that led to these deficiencies in education in FBISD or we can embrace the new model of openness and transparency begun this school year. In his recent community meetings, our new Superintendent discussed his plan for open & honest communication and rebuilding trust in the district, which centers on strong community engagement and dialogue. This is how the recent facilities planning was conducted, in which Kristin Tassin participated.

We need Board members who will support and continue this model of openness and community engagement in all areas of our children's education. Some current candidates for the Board have consistently voiced strong disagreement with the results of this community-led effort and have done so based on "rumors" heard instead of facts which are easily attainable. These candidates did not step up to participate in the future of this district, but instead sat on the sidelines and now criticize the efforts of the community. Their "needs vs. wants" mantra trivializes the voice of the community and the efforts made in developing a first ever Facilities Master Plan. They talk about the concept of a "megabond" as a scare tactic knowing that funding for the recommendations has not yet been addressed. Facts are easy to find by simply attending recent board meetings and board workshops, which these candidates have not. How can someone ask to be your next Trustee when they are not taking the time right now to get informed and attend meetings that affect this district?

Kristin Tassin has not sat on the sidelines but has spent countless hours over the last 8 years working hands-on to improve this district. She will bring not only knowledge and skills critical to Board governance, including 14 years of experience on three boards, but years of experience on how education is actually implemented in FBISD. Kristin supports the strong community engagement model and will work to involve the community at every level on decisions affecting our children, teachers, and community.

When you go to the polls starting April 28th, choose candidates that have demonstrated by their actions and words their support for the new way of doing things in FBISD. Kristin Tassin is the clear choice for FBISD Trustee Position 4!

Mark your calendars - early voting runs April 28th though May 6th and election day is May 10th.

Kristin Tassin announces candidacy for Fort Bend ISD Board Trustee, Position 4

Kristin Tassin announced on Monday, February 17, 2014, that she will seek election to the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees At-Large Position 4. Kristin has spent many years volunteering in Fort Bend ISD and has a long record of service in schools as well as at the district level. When asked why she wants to run for the Board, Kristin stated, “Education and service are very important to our family. I already spend much of my time working on behalf of students, parents and teachers in Fort Bend ISD. It is a natural next-step for me to offer my skills and experience to continue that work on the Board of Trustees.”

Kristin and her husband, Shannon, have lived in Fort Bend for over 17 years. Their three daughters, Abigail, Sarah and Hannah, attend Fort Bend ISD schools, one at Heritage Rose Elementary School and two at Baines Middle School. With her three children, Kristin has experienced all aspects of education in FBISD including the regular education curriculum, the gifted program, and special education and related services. “Having experienced the vast differences in the way my three children learn and are educated in Fort Bend schools, I bring a unique perspective to the Board. I have worked within the schools and partnered with teachers to help create and implement personalized education plans, customized assignments and modifications to curriculum for my own children. I would like to bring this along with my other experience to the Board of Trustees to help all children in Fort Bend ISD.”

Kristin’s other experience includes 18 years of legal experience as an attorney practicing intellectual property litigation, business torts, contract, and special education law. Along with her husband, she also founded a non-profit organization called “Father’s Joy”, which supports families who have children with disabilities. Through Father’s Joy, Kristin has organized, planned and provided educational training, workshops and conferences for educators, parents, attorneys and medical professionals in the areas of differentiated instruction, inclusive education best practices, curriculum modifications and accommodations, special education law, positive behavioral supports, delivering a diagnosis of Down syndrome, and other topics.

Kristin’s volunteer work has extended into Fort Bend ISD and its schools. Kristin stepped up in 2010 as the founding PTO president of Fort Bend’s brand new elementary school, Heritage Rose Elementary. Kristin continued as PTO president for three consecutive years. She also developed and led fundraisers at Heritage Rose, including creation of a community-wide carnival that benefitted the students at the school. She has served as a leader in many capacities in her children’s schools and at the district level, including serving on the FBISD Parent Advisory Council and the FBISD Steering Committee for Facilities Planning as well as attending FBISD legislative breakfasts and board meetings. Kristin also serves as a FBISD Mentoring Program volunteer.

Kristin’s record demonstrates her passion for education and service in Fort Bend. Kristin desires to continue her service on the Board of Trustees, “Fort Bend ISD is a part of my family’s everyday life. I look forward to helping make every school in the district a place where all children receive the highest quality education and enjoy going to school.”
